How is e-commerce business affecting people’s lives in Bangladesh?

Scene 1-:Year 2000 – Mr. Kamrul wants to buy a new phone, his budget is 10,000/- BDT, for some background research before buying the phone, he starts asking his friends and family, he also window shops in malls, and reads updates in newspapers and whatever he could gather from any  other sources. Still he was not satisfied and not sure what phone should he buy.

Scene Two:Year 2015 – Mr. Kamrul wants to buy a new phone, his budget is 10,000/- BDT, for some background research before buying the phone he started looking on e-commerce sites, and managed to get all the information within an hour. He then managed to buy the phone he wanted, and got it delivered to him home the same day.

Sounds like fairy tale in comparison to 2000’s scenario, but this is how the e-commerce business has changed people's lives in Bangladesh. From clothes to cars, furniture to property, people can buy everything from e-commerce sites today.

The number of Internet users are rapidly growing in Bangladesh.. From the Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) data, Internet users reached 47.42 million in May 2015, which was up from 45.68 million in April 2015.

The percentage of people using e-commerce sites are still not as much as in Western countries or, countries like India, where e-commerce has already boomed as a stable market.

 

The only problem, which the government is tackling, is that e-commerce businesses right now do not reach the rural areas fully and effectively. This business is still very much dependent on urban areas. But soon they will make sure they have access to every corner of Bangladesh.
