Sharon’s legacy of terror

Today one of the stories covered by the BBC news made me feel angry as they were showing sympathy and almost glorifying a terrorist. The news read:

"The condition of Israel's former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon - who has been in a coma since 2006 - is now critical, "with some danger to life", his doctors have said."

Ariel Sharon's comatose life may be in danger but when he was alive he simply did everything to terrorise the Palestinians. He killed mercilessly, massacred with impunity and humiliated the Palestinians with joy and pride. He took immense amount of satisfaction in brutally subjugated the Palestinian people.

Ariel Sharon may have been the former Prime Minister of Israel but the civilized world would remember him as a major terrorist. Sharon was in charge of the notorious unit 101 of the Israeli defense force and its sole role was to instill terror by inflicting indiscriminate murderous violence not only on able-bodied fighters but also on the young, the old and even the helpless. Ariel Sharon’s bloodthirsty nature made him loved by the Israeli army.

In August of 1953 on the refugee camp of El-Bureig, south of Gaza, Sharon’s men threw bombs through the windows of huts in which the refugees were sleeping and, as they fled, they were gunned down by small arms and automatic weapons leaving more than fifty dead.

In October 1953, Sharon ordered his men to attack Qibya, blow up houses and inflict heavy casualties on its inhabitants. The village had been reduced to rubble: forty-five houses had been blown up, and sixty-nine civilians, two thirds of them women and children, had been killed.

In the late 1970’s Ariel Sharon and his men bulldozed 100’s of UN aid built houses for the Palestinian refugees in the Gaza beach refugee camp to make a wider and straight road for the Israeli Army’s heavy armours to freely move. Sharon brought in bulldozers and he started flattening the street, completing the destruction almost in one day. Making hundreds of refugees become homeless again.

In August 1971 alone Sharon ordered the destruction of 2,000 homes in the Gaza Strip, uprooting 16,000 people for the second time in their lives. Hundreds of young Palestinian men were arrested and deported to Jordan and Lebanon. Six hundred relatives of Palestinian activists were exiled to Sinai. In the second half of 1971, 104 Palestinians were assassinated. The policy at that time was not to arrest suspects, but to assassinate them.

1982 Sharon as the commander of Israeli Army led the assault on Lebanon causing untold suffering, around 20,000 Palestinian and Lebanese lives, and also the deaths of over one thousand Israeli soldiers. The Israelis bombed civilian populations at will. The invasion of Lebanon was termed “Peace for the Galilee” by Sharon and the mission left thousands of civilians killed and rendered nearly half a million homeless.

September 16, 1982 Sharon as the Defense Minister was responsible for the protection of the areas under its control, yet his men carried out the massacre of refugees in cold blood. They started their slaughter at 6pm on the 16th and finished at 8am on September 18. The perpetrators were members of the Phalange militia, the Lebanese force that was armed by and closely allied with Israel since the onset of Lebanon’s civil war in 1975. The 2000 victims during the 62-hour rampage included infants, children, women (including pregnant women), and the elderly, some of whom were mutilated or disemboweled before or after they were killed. Sharon will never be forgotten for his role in the infamous massacres at Sabra and Shatilla refugee camp.

Sharon was always against peace with the Palestinians. He would have been happy to incinerate the entire Palestinian people if he had his fingers on the triggers of the Israeli nuclear weapons.

January 18, 1979, as a member of Begin’s cabinet, Sharon voted against a peace treaty with Egypt. In 1985 he voted against the withdrawal of Israeli troops to theso-called security zone in Southern Lebanon. In 1991 he opposed Israel’s participation in the Madrid peace conference. In 1993 he voted No in the Knesset on the Oslo agreement. The following year he abstained in the Knesset on a vote over a peace treaty with Jordan. He voted against the Hebron agreement in 1997 and objected to the way in which the withdrawal from southern Lebanon was conducted.

On September 28, 2000, Ariel Sharon's incursion into Al Aqsa sanctuary accompanied by at least 1,000 armed soldiers and police officers triggered the outbreak of the Al-Aqsa Intifada and led to the death of hundreds of Palestinians and the wounding of thousands.

Sharon ordered his troops with the following words: "The Palestinians must be hit and it must be very painful. We must cause them losses, victims, so that they feel the heavy price. "

In March 2002. Sharon’s launched his “Defensive Shield’ operation, to refute the Arab countries’ peace initiative. Sharon ordered his troops to sweep and even erase ‘ Jenin’ Camp from the map. Jenin has been a home to 13000 Palestinian Arabs who were uprooted by the creation of Israel in 1948. They came under brutal aggression for almost 16 days, April 3-18. Israeli army used every heavy means to destroy including helicopters, missiles, rockets, tanks, machine guns and snipers. They razed almost every house inside the camp and continued their house to house assault using the camp civilians as human shields.

Ariel Sharon's comatose life is in danger but the death of the innocent Palestinians, destruction of their homes and properties and systematic humiliation of the these people will be his vile legacy. While the BBC may mourn his potential death, the people of the world should celebrate the ending of a terrorist’s life. I do not remember BBC mourning the loss of Palestinian life in the same way.

Sharon in a vegetative state must be an example for the rest of us. No matter how powerful you think you are, natural justice will eventually catch you and take you down. Sharon is kept alive artificially with machines but his soul is facing the eternal damnation and torment suspended between life and death. What a miserable end!
